Amazing designs in Lakedew

We finished our third session. It was time to explore the designs from all project teams. As always, it was so motivating to see the energy and creativity of all teams.

Here is what the team calls as the Lazy Jack (TM). A fairly sophisticated mechanism to lift a light using two jacks and one hydraulic mechanism. Ambitious to say the least.

Another team wants to crush fruits in what they call the Fast and Furious Juicer (TM). Won’t be surprised if I see it on amazon market place one of these days. See the details in the illustration!!

The third team had to abandon their design after we debated the idea. They were a bit disappointed but, recovered quickly by evening to come up with a new design. This is an all girls team.

Wonder women 🙂

I always think the journey of learning far outweighs the content of what you learn. The kids are learning so many lessons – some technical and others life – because they are driving this journey. They have an idea and they are working to make it happen.

No one is managing them. They are managing themselves.

We also debated around one idea, and a quick experiment settled all debates. Let’s just do it 🙂

Summer Camp Purvafairmont, May 2018

After the success of the two programs in Purva – one in December on building a hydraulic mechanism and the other one in Jan on waves, it’s time to ratchet up the game !!

This May we are going to a very different style of a program. We will have reading assignments (see the list). We will build a  Rube Goldberg machine (see the world record winning version). As ever we will work in teams and analyze movies !!

Key facts about the program:

  • Topic: Build a Rube Goldberg machine
  • Design, build, collaborate and learn to work in teams. Figure out the physics in trying to make it work
  • 6 sessions from May 5th (Sat), May 6th (Sun), May 11th (Fri), May 13th (Sun),
  • Friday and Sunday 4:00 – 5:30 PM (except the first session on 5th, a saturday)
  • For children ~10-14 years / classes 5-8
  • The sessions will be in the Purvafairmont Clubhouse
  • Fees Rs. 1,200 per child

There will be a lot more happening than just the topic at hand. The experience and interactions will be much more crucial than the content itself. For example see this one on Pascal’s principle and another on waves.

Check out how they work in teams.

… how they build real things

… and how their parents play a key role

May 2018 Summer Camp Purva (1).png

Over 6 sessions, children will EXPLORE, EXPERIMENT, EXPERIENCE and EXPRESS in this journey of learning. Kids can expect three things …

  1. Learn to Learn (EXPLORE) … discussion on learning concepts such as Growth vs Talent Mindset and Deliberate Practice
  2. Creation. Build a Project (EXPLORE, EXPERIMENT and EXPERIENCE) … teams of 2-3 will build a project (say a ‘hydraulic mechanism’). In the process appreciating the application of physics, challenges of coming up with original ideas, facing the obstacles of building / tinkering with real things and above all working as a team
  3. Critically Analyze and Synthesize (EXPLORE and EXPRESS) … we will watch small movie clips, critically analyze the layers/nuances (camera angles, sound, expressions, story telling etc.) and articulate those ideas. Kids love this

Please see the following links to understand more about StableBow and the program. Of course, we can talk more when we meet in the introduction session on Dec 16th.

Science Camp Lakedew residency – April 2018

I am planning a series of summer science camps in April-May 2018.

Will be conducting a 6 week program for children in the Words Work Library and Children’s Center in Lakedew residency, Harlur, Bangalore.

Well, the topic of science is incidental. The real objective of the camp is to instill a love for learning, critical thinking and appreciation for collaboration in young minds.

The ‘why of StableBow‘ can explain more about this thinking.

Key facts about the program:

  • Topic: Paradox of Pressure
  • Includes study of pressure … the effect on fluids and gases. The not so obvious intuition behind Pascal’s principle and Boyle’s law
  • 6 sessions from April 20th – May 6th
  • Friday and Sunday 9:00 – 10:30 AM
  • For children ~9-14 years / classes 5-8
  • The sessions will be in the Words Work Library and Children’s Center, Lakedew Residency, Harlur (directions click here)
  • Fees Rs. 1,500 per child
  • Contact Radha or click here to register

Radha and the team are so passionate about creating a special environment for children in and around Lakedew.

I am excited to add to it.

Intro session – Lakedew Dec 2018

The only way I can describe the intro session in Lakedew is “can’t tell whether the kids were more excited or the adults“.

Supported by my two assistants (Surya and Ishanth !) and guiding hand of Radha – we started with an experiment. Imagine there is glass full of water with floating ice cubes. Make sure it’s absolutely full such that some of the ice is jutting above the water level. What will happen to the water level when the ice melts? Will it a. Spill over b. Stay as it is c. Go down?

Won’t give the answer to it now, but we had some interesting debate on what the right answer is. We actually did the experiment. Now imagine we used ice cubes frozen with marbles inside them. What will happen now?

Ahaah.

After that we watched the Docking scene from interstellar again and again … each time trying to observe more subtle things about the story telling. Amazed by the little things each child noticed. We used four questions below to illustrate the point that everything in life can be studied in more depth beyond the obvious layers.

  • Why does the background music go quiet at 0.17?
  • Why does the camera have the planet in the background at 0.27?
  • Why does Cooper say, what he does, in reply to Tars at 1:15?
  • Why does the camera shift to a far shot at 2:50?

Happy to see so much enthusiasm from both parents and children. Look forward to starting the season 1 on Jan 14th, 2018. Yes it will be on a Sunday as requested by many parents. Details are posted here.

Lakedew residency – Jan 2018

In Jan 2018, I will be conducting a 5 week program for children in the Words Work Library and Children’s Center in Lakedew residency, Harlur, Bangalore. Radha and the team are so passionate about creating a special environment for children in and around Lakedew.

Very excited about adding to the energy and possibilities there.

Key facts about the program:

  • 5 sessions from January 14th – February 11th
  • Sunday 2:30 – 4:00 PM
  • Introduction session for parents and children is on Sunday Dec 16th at 2:30 PM
  • For children ~10-14 years / classes 5-8
